The 2024 Volvo XC90 B6 AWD Plus is a premium, mid-tier luxury midsize SUV that balances upscale comfort with reliable family utility
Core Specifications
  • Powertrain: 2.0L 4-cylinder "Twincharger" engine (Turbocharged and Supercharged) paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system.
  • Output: 295 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.
  • Transmission: 8-speed automatic transmission.
  • Drivetrain: Standard All-Wheel Drive (AWD).
  • Fuel Economy: Approximately 10.4 L/100 km combined (roughly 23 MPG combined).
  • Acceleration: 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds (0–60 mph in 6.4 seconds).
  • Towing Capacity: Up to 5 000 lbs (2 268 kg)
The Volvo B6 powertrain uses three different types of forced induction and electrical assistance to make a small 2.0-liter engine feel like a large powerful V6.
Here is exactly how the Supercharger Turbocharger and 48V Mild-Hybrid system work together seamlessly across different driving speeds:

1. The 48V Mild-Hybrid System (Launch & Smoothing)
  • What it is: A small electric motor-generator connected to the engine powered by a 48-volt battery.
  • How it helps: When you press the gas pedal from a complete stop this electric motor instantly injects torque into the wheels. It eliminates the delay typical of gas engines and restarts the engine silently during stop-and-go traffic.

2. The Supercharger (Low Speeds / 0 to ~3 000 RPM)
  • What it is: An electric air compressor driven directly by electric power rather than exhaust gases.
  • How it helps: Standard turbochargers take a second to "spool up" because they rely on exhaust pressure (this delay is called turbo lag). The electric supercharger forces extra air into the engine instantly at low speeds giving you immediate throttle response the moment you step on the gas.

3. The Turbocharger (High Speeds / 3 000+ RPM)
  • What it is: A traditional turbine driven by the car's exhaust gases.
  • How it helps: Once you are moving and the engine gains RPMs it produces a high volume of exhaust gas. This gas takes over to spin the turbocharger which provides massive airflow for highway merging and high-speed passing power.
